Frank-Walter Steinmeier visits Rail Baltica construction site

22.2.2022

On February 16, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Latvian President Egils Levits visited the construction site of the future Rail Baltica central hub at Riga Central Station in Riga.

There they met implementers and representatives of the global Rail Baltica project.

Rail Baltica, the largest infrastructure project in the Baltic region of the last 100 years, is the symbolic return of the Baltic States to Europe: The 870 km electrified line is to be designed for both passenger and freight traffic and includes five countries of the European Union. The aim is to integrate the Baltic states into the European rail network. The north-south link will connect the cities of Tallinn, Pärnu, Riga, Panevežys, Kaunas, Vilnius and Warsaw.

The meeting in Riga marked the start of the next stage of the Rail Baltica project, namely the beginning of the full-scaled construction phase in all three Baltic countries. More than 200 Baltic companies as well as 50 companies from other EU countries, including seven from Germany, are currently working on the realization of the project.

In 2020, OBERMEYER has been assigned by RB Rail AS, the joint venture of the Rail Baltica project, with the technical design and construction supervision services of the 93.5 km long Estonian section of the Rail Baltica main line.

The entire planning, both for the routing and the engineering structures, is carried out using the latest digital tools by applying Building Information Modeling (BIM).
