„U celebrate, u enjoy“ is one of the winning designs

28.1.2022

The consortium under participation of OBERMEYER is one of the winners in the international competition of Guangzhou Airport New Town underground space planning and design.

The competition was held by the Guangzhou Aerotropolis Development District Administration. The aim was to seek an international and pioneering design for the further development of Guangzhou Airport New Town. According to the host, 19 consortiums from over 46 companies worldwide participated. Eight teams were shortlisted. On January 11, the jury announced the consortium with the participation of OBERMEYER as one of the three winners.

OBERMEYER, together with the Guangdong Architectural Design & Research Institute and the Guangzhou Urban Planning & Design Survey Research Institute, had submitted a concept called "U celebrate, u enjoy". The innovative power and vision of this design were convincing:

"U celebrate, U enjoy" consists of "a spine and six zones" to connect the u-shaped Airport New Town with the airport itself. It provides a mix-use place with a park, a shopping center, cultural facilities and entertainment venues. The design highlights the POD mode (POD = park oriented development) and the TOD mode (TOD = transportation oriented development) to improve connections and accessibility of the Airport New Town.

An area integrating both above- and below-ground levels is joined by the "green spine" stretching to the east and west; a core with a green valley and several courtyards with different themes, extending to the east and west.
