Technical Details

The project involves the design of a 1.75 km long service road along Mesogion Ave., with the aim to upgrade and modernise it, , rendering the urban space accessible, contemporary, and inviting to open-air activities, while regulating traffic and parking. Upgrade, and Modernisation of Service Road along Mesogion Ave. 

The new layout enhances overall road safety, ensuring a smoother traffic flow by minimizing conflicting traffic movements at intersections and discouraging through-traffic, thus reducing traffic congestion. It ensures unobstructed pedestrian and vehicle movement by optimizing parking management through the clear demarcation and segregation of parking spaces. Pedestrian infrastructure is upgraded, enabling seamless and safe pedestrian mobility, with no elevation changes between circulation areas, while increasing the effective pedestrian zone. Sustainable mobility is promoted by converting the service road into a low-traffic street by developing a shared-use corridor for vehicles and bicycles.

The new upgraded and modern urban environment of the service road enhances the commercial and recreational character of the adjacent areas and supports the local economy and quality of life. Simplicity of forms is the main design tool implemented, resulting from the constrained available space and the context of its surroundings, which are characterized by the complexity of private developments, predominantly commercial and recreational.

The overall concept is based on the idea of a hardscape/softscape canvas laid on the ground. The introduction of the “herringbone fabric” concept facilitates the integration of the urban landscape’s multi-faceted functions and diverse elements and is an effective tool to accommodate existing non-regular geometries.

Services Provided

The scope of services includes four main stages for the architectural design assigned to Obermeyer: preliminary, final and detailed design and tender documentation. Furthermore, Obermeyer acted as a leading team member within a multi-disciplinary team, which also included road, electrical, greenery and environmental design and Health & Safety.
