Hangzhou Qianjiang New City Core Area ( CBD ) Urban Design, Central Axis ( Underground City ) and City Balcony Design

The Qianjiang New City Core Area ( CBD ) is located in the southeastern part of Hangzhou, on the north bank of the Qiantang River. In order to breakthrough the constraints of limited land, to enter the grand new century, and to consider the needs of future city growth, Obermeyer conducted a forward-looking planning and design. After more than a decade of development, the core area has been successfully built as Hangzhou's vibrant new CBD and urban heartland, infusing the city with fresh vitality, ushering it into a new era of growth, and creating a distinctive urban landmark - the Urban Balcony.

The new Core Area integrates offices, conferences & exhibitions, and tourism & leisure, featuring hotels, office towers, public cultural buildings and residentials. The high-rise towers shape out an undulating city skyline; The interplay between the underground shopping mall and the above-ground cultural buildings forms a new urban axis ( the Wave Culture City ); Various elements like steps, ramps, escalators, and glass-roofed arcades on the plaza guide the visitors from the surface, the sunken plazas and the underground courtyards up to the City Balcony that locates at the end of the CBD axis ( about 300 meters wide and extends out over the Qiantang River ).

The core area faces the Qiantang River, with the new city's main axis intersecting the waterway. The City Balcony serves as an ideal vantage point for observing the Qiantang tidal bore.

In 2016, the Wave Culture City hosted the G20 Summit, a world-class high-level government conference.
