The Natural Reserve Base of Chinese Sturgeon at Yangtze Estuary 2nd Phase

In 2018, OBERMEYER joined the design competition of The Yangtze River Estuary Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve and was awarded with deepening work till completion. In 2023, the project has successfully completed the building construction. The Yangtze River Estuary Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve is located in Chongming Island, of an area of approximately 263 acres. It is one of the largest comprehensive centre for research, conservation, and science education of aquatic organisms in China. It equips with facilities including the Yangtze River Life Pavilion, research building, staff duty facilities, as well as outdoor conservation ponds and ecological wetlands. The Reserve is a specialized aquatic biological conservation centre and a landmark of Chongming Ecological Island.

Concept

During the design of the Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve, OBERMEYER design team takes the "Yangtze River" and the cultural heritage along its banks as the main source of inspiration. They have adopted the Chinese philosophical concept of "harmony between man and nature" as their guiding principle, aiming to create an environment that is in harmony with nature.

To achieve the design goals, OBERMEYER team fully utilizes architectural aesthetics and parametric design to create a stunning environment that allows people to experience the wonders of nature firsthand. Through the construction of this reserve base, the design team provides visitors with a unique ecological experience, enabling them to deeply understand the importance of ecological conservation and inspire their love and care for nature.

The Chinese Sturgeon Nature Reserve is a natural ecological park themed on the protection of the Chinese sturgeon, integrating multiple functions such as science popularization, ecological experience, ecological research, rescue, and cultivation. The design team ensures orderly connection and operation between the functional areas through clear planning zoning and non-interfering circulation system. At the same time, the design team also focuses on efficient use of resources to reduce waste and improve efficiency, and well organizes the building functions to maximize the usage of space.
