The clinical complex in Grosshadern is one of the largest university clinics in Germany. In the course of the next 25 years of continuous ongoing operation, the aim is to completely rebuild the entire facility. The interdisciplinary implementation competition has attracted a great deal of praise from the Free State of Bavaria for its wealth of town planning concepts, and the aim is to build six new clinic centres on a site measuring about 70,000 m². This current competition focuses primarily on the first phase of construction which accounts for about 60% of this billion euro project.

In February 2021, the jury awarded prizes to three draft designs. OBERMEYER was awarded 2nd prize for its work. The draft design convinced the jury, in their own words, “by its consistently outstanding architectural quality” and it was deemed to provide “a superlative solution with a high level of amenity right across the external area of the site”.

The key notion was that of ‘Grosshadern Health Campus, to utilise the healing aspects of an environment close to the natural world, with the surrounding landscape becoming a particularly important part of this new facility. This gigantic structure is divided up into a set of functional centres. Employing a modular ‘chessboard-like system’ for the layout scheme, it is possible to respond flexibly to requirements.

The intention is to have a seamless transition from buildings to parkland to the surrounding landscape. An urbane two-storey edge projects at the northern perimeter.

The concept of sustainable construction is also built into this draft design: As far as possible, demolished and excavated materials are employed on site for new forms of use, e.g. for landscape modelling.
