Düsseldorf Airport, renovation of taxiways K5 and L9

Project duration from 2011 to 2023

Client
Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH

Location
Düsseldorf, DE

Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH is renovating taxiways K5 and L9, now more than 50 years old and measuring 50 metres in width.

This renovation work involves the operational flight areas and technical equipment as well as primary drainage together with sections of secondary drainage and cable runs.

The entire project is divided into a preliminary and a main construction section with new structures and conversion work taking place during the preliminary stage without affecting flight operations. This work includes renovation of the DN 1000 main collector and the construction of a new cable run. The main phase of the construction work will involve the existing taxiway being demolished in sections and rebuilt, working around the clock with day shifts and night shifts. Restoration of the taxiway will, when completed, reduce the total width to 44 metres. The slot trench running down the western edge of the taxiway will be demolished together with connecting pipework in the scope of renovation work and will be replaced with a new trench.

The maintenance of drainage and lighting for daytime flying operations requires this new-build to follow a dedicated and planned schedule, tackling individual areas of renovation work in a defined sequence.
