OBERMEYER is awarded the contract by ARGE FIT-Korridor Riedbahn 2024 Lot 1 as general planner for the refurbishment of the Riedbahn high-capacity corridor
Just one year after the decision to carry out the general refurbishment of the Riedbahn, OBERMEYER Infrastructure has been commissioned as general planner to complete the design planning and implementation planning. The client, ARGE FIT-Korridor Riedbahn 2024 Lot 1, consists of the companies SPITZKE SE and LEONHARD WEISS GmbH & Co. KG, which are the general contractors of DB Netz AG for the northern section of the Riedbahn.
The section between Mannheim and Frankfurt am Main, the Riedbahn, is one of the most congested on the ICE network. Every seventh long-distance train passes through this section, which is in urgent need of renovation. In order to optimize the passage and upgrade it for more capacity, the Riedbahn is to be completely overhauled in just five months in 2024. This includes the renewal of 117 kilometers of track, 140 kilometers of overhead lines, 152 points (including three new crossing points) and 20 stations along the route.
Preparations for this ambitious infrastructure project are in full swing. To ensure that the construction materials can be ordered on time and construction can begin on schedule from July 15, 2024, the majority of the implementation planning must be completed by May 2024 at the latest. “We are proud to be able to contribute our know-how in overall planning together with our expertise in digital route planning and thus make a significant contribution to the success of this very challenging project,” says Marc Kückmann, Branch Manager Karlsruhe, OBERMEYER Infrastructure.
This will now be followed by the creation of the digital planning model by the Digital Planning departments in Karlsruhe and Essen and the start of specialist planning at numerous OBERMEYER Infrastructure locations. The basis for the digital coordination of the planning is the complete kinematic recording of the route, which was already carried out in October 2022 with the state-of-the-art EM 100 VT measuring vehicle. Agile project management tools are also being used here.
From July 15, 2024, directly after the European Football Championship in Germany, the route will be completely closed for five months. Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, said in an interview with Deutsche Presse Agentur about the modernization of the Riedbahn: “This will bring us improved punctuality and train operations at maximum speed in the long term”.
